Sullivan’s Island
On the east side of Charleston, there are two main beaches: Sullivan’s and Isle of Palms (IOP). I prefer Sullivan's over IOP. IOP has a more tourist vibe, while Sullivan’s is more quiet and has a local feel to it.
Quick notes about Sullivan's:
Plenty of free parking (make sure to read the signs carefully along the roads and be respectful of people’s properties)
Multiple beach access points
Restaurants and shops on Middle Street
Walking nature trail and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park
Personal Favorite Restaurant Recs:
Poe’s Tavern - Sandwiches and burgers, outdoor + indoor bar
Obstinate Daughter - American cuisine. Highly suggest making a reservation weeks out.
Sullivan’s Fish Camp - Cozy atmosphere, seafood, indoor bar
The CO-OP - Frosé and sandwiches
Dunleavy’s Pub - Wings, cash only
Shem Creek
Shem Creek has one of the best sunset views, while you get drinks with my friends. And if you’re lucky, you might see some dolphins swim by. Here are my personal recommendations:
Red’s Ice House
Saltwater Cowboys
If you’re looking for a sit-down restaurant for dinner by the creek…
Tavern and Table
NICO (not by the water, but delicious restaurant)
The Mill Street Tavern
Wanna get active and get some nice views of Charleston? Run or walk the Ravenel Bridge!
From Mt. Pleasant side, park at the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park
Free parking
Public Restrooms + water fountains
Easy to follow ramp onto the bridge
From Downtown side, free parking alongside East Bay Street
Longer stretch to reach the main part of the bridge
No public restrooms and water fountains
(I personally prefer to start on Mt. Pleasant side)
